What is VMware NSX?
NSX is a network and security service from VMware's cross-cloud product family. VMware NSX aims to provide virtual network environments without the need for direct intervention by administrators. Network virtualization abstracts the network from the underlying hardware in a distributed virtualization layer to enable vendor-independent virtual networking of hypervisors, cloud management systems and the associated network hardware.
By automating network and security services, workload mobility, disaster recovery, ransomware defense and more, VMware NSX enables organizations to overcome some of the biggest networking challenges and save costs.
According to a Total Economic Impact study conducted by Forrester, NSX is used by leading organizations to achieve productivity gains, capital and operational cost savings, and improved security. More than 90% of the Fortune 100 companies surveyed use NSX in their data centers and achieve average CapEx and OpEx savings of 60% or more.
VMware NSX for vSphere vs. NSX-T
The big advantage of NSX-T over NSX for vSphere (formerly NSX-V) is that you do not need a vCenter Server to use NSX-T for your network virtualization. While NSX is based on the vSphere ecosystem, NSX-T can be used independently and flexibly. NSX-T supports various hypervisors and environments and focuses on cloud-native applications, bare-metal workloads, multi-hypervisor environments, public clouds and multi-cloud environments.
