In principle, both process management and lean management pursue the same goal: efficient and effective processes. However, they differ fundamentally in their approach.

Process management involves a top-down approach managed by staff divisions or specialist departments. It essentially comprises the planning, execution, monitoring and optimisation of business processes.

Lean management, on the other hand, follows a bottom-up approach. Every employee contributes to the reduction of resource wasting and thus to an increase in value creation. Methods such as the PDCA cycle (Deming cycle), Kanban or the 5S method are applied in this context.
